CALEDONIA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Caledonia man accused of shooting and killing his neighbor's dog told police he thought her death was "a good thing," according to court documents.

Prosecutors say 54-year-old Nicholas Schmidt shot the dog with a pellet gun after she got loose on July 15.

The 2-year-old dog, Chili, was taken to a veterinary hospital and died during emergency surgery.

Video obtained by investigators reportedly shows a man believed to be Schmidt standing in his garage, aiming what police say looks like a hunting rifle. 

Schmidt initially denied shooting Chili, according to the criminal complaint, telling officers he wasn't home at the time and didn't own any pellet guns. Prosecutors say he later admitted to shooting the dog with a pellet gun, saying he didn't mean to kill the dog, but wanted to injure her to get her away.

Schmidt went on to say it was probably about the ninth time Chili has gotten away, according to the complaint, despite earlier telling officers he'd never seen the dog. 

He's charged with mistreatment of animals causing death and resisting or obstructing an officer. 

An initial court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 10.
