MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- With cold temps follows a steep price tag, We Energies saying prices are the highest they have been decades.
"Actually, it's three times higher at one point in the late [2022] than they were just two years earlier," said Brendan Conway, spokesperson for We Energies.
Consumer experts like Cliff Robb, consumer science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, are stepping in to share ways that folks can decrease their energy bills.
"One of the nice things about a lot of utilities is it is one of the places where we have flexibility in how much we use and how we utilize that part of our expenditures," said Robb.
It's recommended to take advantage of sunny days to let that natural heat in the home. Another suggestion is to lower the heat to the upper 60's.
Robb said he believes the reason for the spike in energy bill prices is the increased cost of natural gas from providers to gas companies, as well as energy companies flexing their market power.
We Energies is aiding their customers.
"We have payment plans, heating assistance. One thing I recommend everybody is budget billing that means it just smooths out your payments, so you don’t have that increase and those spikes," said Conway.
