MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As the call for volunteers to continues for people to help pack backpacks full of food in Waukesha County, we were joined by Susan Reed and Regina Estrada of Blessings in a Backpack of Waukesha County on Monday, May 15 to learn more about the project and its purpose.

WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Waukesha County Chapter of Blessings in a Backpack is calling for volunteers to help pack 3,000 food bags for local children in need.

Scheduled for Saturday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the community bag fill event will be held at JLL's Crossroads Corporate Center II in Waukesha.

According to a press release about the event issued on Monday, May 1, bags will be filled with supplemental food before being distributed to children on the last day of school to provide nourishment over the summer.

Blessings in a Backpack serves over 1,150 locations throughout the nation. Their Waukesha County chapter was established in 2012, discreetly gives out food bags every Friday during the school year, making it their aim to address the hunger struggles faced by over 15,000 children aged 17 and under in the area.

The organization states that sufficient food has been linked to improved test scores, reading skills, positive behavior, better health, increased school attendance and an overall sense of community care.
