BUTLER, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Thursday, July 27, residents in the Village of Butler were asked to boil their water before using it.

The boil advisory went into effect after a water main broke just after 3 a.m. Thursday morning, near Mid City Plumbing.

Village officials told people not to drink or cook with their water for the next 24 hours; this comes as they test area water for possible contamination.

"We are sending that [water samples] to the lab to get tested, and then we'll hear probably by tomorrow [Friday] if we can lift the advisory," said Ben Hubrich, Village Administrator for the Village of Butler.

As a result of the break, the village experienced a drop in water pressure, losing 25 percent of its water servicing, including the treatment and distribution of water.

The cause of the break is still unknown.

"It is unusual, but you know things happen, infrastructure sometimes fails, but we're dedicated to getting it done [fixed] and we are confident that the water quality will not be affected," said Hubrich.

He went on to say that those who drank the water before the advisory went out should be okay, but to watch for any drastic health symptoms.

The most at-risk population would be those who are immunocompromised.

Officials said the water was okay to bathe in and wash hands with.
