MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A rather unique traffic hazard caught several drivers by surprise.

Cellphone video captured a sheep on the loose near Layton and Burnham in Milwaukee.

After a brief chase, the Milwaukee Police Department was able to capture the sheep safely near 23d and Rogers and take it over to the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) where it has been living since.

According to MADACC, the male sheep is currently on a farm with a "foster farmer" who is better equipped to take care of him.

"The sheep left Friday night, which was great, never had to spend the night here, and he is now with that farmer as a foster to adopt. So once the stray hold is up, he will be staying with that farmer," said Kate Hartlund, community engagement coordinator with MADACC.

MADACC says the sheep was in good spirits despite a stressful day out on the town.

Livestock isn't legal to own in the city of Milwaukee.

MADACC does not know how the sheep ended up on the street.
