Washington County officials investigate death of 4-month-old infant at campground

WEST BEND, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a four-month-old female infant at a campground in Farmington on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Officials say the mother, a 38-year-old Washington County woman, called 911 around 7:30 a.m. to report her infant was not breathing and she was attempting to drive the baby to a medical facility. 

Deputies met the mother on Lakeview Road at Cty Hwy A and took over CPR from a family friend and good Samaritan until medical responders arrived on scene, officials say. 

The infant was then transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Officials say a preliminary investigation suggests the baby was sleeping in bed with the mother overnight. Officials say Washington County detectives will continue to investigate the exact circumstances leading up to the infant's death.
