Warning posted on Greenfield mailbox after reported thefts; woman says mail was stolen from same box years ago, questions why it still happens
GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A warning sign posted on a mailbox outside the Greenfield post office on Forest Home Avenue is drawing attention after additional reports of mail thefts, and one resident says she wants to know why more has not been done.
The mailbox sits directly outside the post office and now tells customers not to use the collection box and to bring outgoing mail inside instead.
“It’s heartbreaking to find people still using mailboxes are still getting things taken, and it’s been almost three years,” Diane Conrad said.
Conrad said she experienced a similar incident in 2023 when she says more than $800 worth of checks for bills were stolen after she mailed them in the same box.
She said she later received a call from Cudahy police after her mail was recovered inside a person’s vehicle.
“I got a call from the Cudahy Police Department saying we’ve found your bills in the backseat of a car, we stopped a guy and he had a bunch of people bills in the back of his car and want to know if you want your bills back. Yes, of course,” Conrad said.
Conrad said her checks were recovered, but she said she reported her concerns about the mailbox to Greenfield authorities and did not feel they were addressed.
“I did contact the postal inspector general, the police, and I just felt like I was blown off,” she said.
Greenfield police are asking anyone who used the mailbox between last Saturday and Monday to monitor their mail closely for possible issues.
Conrad said she now avoids using outdoor mailboxes.
“The Cudahy police were very nice and told me never to use a blue box again, and I believe them. I’ve always gone into post offices now,” she said.
Authorities say anyone who believes their mail has been compromised should contact local police.
