Violins of Hope brings Holocaust-era instruments to Milwaukee performances

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Historic violins that survived the Holocaust are being played on Milwaukee stages this fall through a partnership among Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Ballet, Skylight Music Theatre and the We Energies Foundation.
The instruments, part of the Violins of Hope Wisconsin residency, are being featured in more than 80 performances, exhibitions and educational events statewide through January 2026.
At Skylight Music Theatre, two violins from the collection are being used in "Fiddler on the Roof," one on stage and another in the orchestra, through Saturday, Oct. 26.
Milwaukee Ballet’s "Giselle," reimagined in the 1940s, will include one violin played live on stage from Oct. 17 through 19 at the Marcus Performing Arts Center.
"The mission and vision of the Violins of Hope commemorates the Holocaust and its victims by collecting and restoring violins played by Jewish musicians in concentration camps and ghettos, utilizing these instruments as symbols to teach about resilience, inspire unity, and combat bigotry," said Linda Edelstein, chief executive officer of MYSO in a Friday, Oct. 10 press release.
