Person caught on DOT video riding e-scooter on Milwaukee County highway
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) cameras captured a person riding an electric scooter on I-94 in Milwaukee County today.
It happened around 7:40 a.m. on Thursday, May 11.
"It shouldn't happen, there's signs posted on every on-ramp. No pedestrians, no bikes," said Sgt. Daniel Hansen of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.
According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the person reportedly rode the scooter onto southbound I-94 by getting on at Rawson Avenue.
Officials believe the rider got off the freeway at Drexel Avenue, returned back on the southbound Drexel on-ramp, continued south on I-94, exited the freeway once again at Ryan Road, traveled east on Ryan Road and turned south on 13th Street before losing track of them.
Authorities say the deputy dispatched to the report was unable to locate the rider.
Sgt. Hansen said it's not the first time they've seen a scooter driver on the highway but believe some accidentally end up there.
"A lot of times they're just following their maps on their phone, I have to remind them to put the walking directions instead of the vehicle directions. A lot of times it's just people that aren't aware," said Hansen.
He said the e-scooters typically either shut down or slow down when getting into restricted areas like the highway.
The scooter in the traffic cam video appears to be a Lime scooter, the company spokesperson saying:
" This rider behavior is as rare as it is unacceptable. We have found and banned the rider and will continue our work in partnership with the city to encourage riding safely and respecting the law, which is what the vast majority of our riders do."
The sheriff's office says they are keeping an eye out for the individual or anyone else engaging in illegal and/or dangerous activity on the freeways.
