UWM offering two new degree programs to broaden access to engineering careers

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is expanding their academics by offering two new degree programs in the Fall.
The UWM College of Engineering and Applied Science is offering a new undergraduate and graduate degree. The bachelor's degree that has a more interdisciplinary path to an engineering degree than their current programs. While the new master's degree is a flexible concentration focusing on artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML).
The goal for the undergraduate degree is to let students choose specialized tracks based on their interests and career goals which include embedded systems, engineering management, manufacturing, software engineering, construction engineering, power engineering and engineering operations and systems.
The interdisciplinary program is going to be used to maximize student's existing credits to ensure an efficient time-to-completion.
This degree will be ideal for transfer students from technical colleges, returning students who hold college credit and individuals already working in technical fields.
The graduate program concentration is to allow professional advancement as jobs and industries adopt AI techniques to engineering.
“AI and ML are rapidly evolving fields that are becoming an integral part of every aspect of science and engineering,” said Professor Prasenjit Guptasarma, associate dean for academic affairs at UWM. “Fluency with the fundamental methods and practices of AI and ML will soon become a minimum requirement for anyone entering the advanced workforce.”
