United Way launches $58 million homelessness prevention initiative

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County has launched its 2026 Community Campaign with a goal of raising $58 million across Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties.

The organization announced a new initiative on Wednesday, Aug. 26: "Safe & Stable Homes: Housing Stability for All," aimed at preventing homelessness for 40,000 people by 2032. More than 118,000 people across the four-county region are considered at risk of homelessness, according to United Way.

"A safe, stable home is more than a roof over someone's head. It is the foundation for everything else - work, school, health, family and opportunity," said Amy Lindner, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County.

The program will focus on eviction prevention, rapid rehousing, targeted financial assistance through a Flex Fund and a coordinated system connecting people at risk of homelessness with case managers and support services.

The effort builds on United Way meeting its criteria for ending family homelessness in the region in 2025, according to the organization.
