Thousands gather for Milwaukee County's July 3 Drone Show
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Thousands of people packed McKinley Beach on Thursday evening for Milwaukee County's second annual July 3 Drone Show, filling the lakefront with blankets, lawn chairs and picnic dinners ahead of the patriotic display.
Hundreds of drones took to the sky, creating animated images celebrating America's upcoming 250th birthday and Milwaukee landmarks, all synchronized to music.
From the Hoan Bridge to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, organizers say this year's show featured several new additions designed to make the display even more memorable.
"It's a great way to start off the weekend here," said Andrew Ackmann, chief operating officer for Northern Lights Drone Shows.
For some attendees, the event has already become a holiday tradition. For others, it was their first drone show.
"We were debating doing there or fireworks somewhere, but never seen a drone show so we said give it a chance," said Sheri Dague.
Beyond the aerial display, many said they came to enjoy the festive atmosphere along Milwaukee's lakefront.
"It's a beautiful day out here on the beach, there's music everywhere," said Ramiro Castillo. "There's different people playing music everywhere, the weather's perfect."
Ackmann said this year's show incorporated new pyrotechnic effects, including comets, mines and waterfall-style spark showers timed to key moments in the performance.
"Comets and mines and waterfalls like spark showers used at strategic times throughout the show to really add a pop and wow factor to the show," he said.
