NOW: ’This is so crucial’: City leaders release plans for International Overdose Prevention Day

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee is one of many cities across the country that continues the long-lasting fight against drug abuse.

Aug. 31 is International Overdose Prevention Day, dedicated to survivors, families and friends who are impacted by this crisis.

On Monday, Aug. 25, a news conference was held outlining this year's plans for the day of observance.

Despite a meaningful decline in overdoses over the past few years, city officials continue to push community-wide prevention strategies.

"This is so crucial, it is not good enough anymore to keep going with 911 calls and waking a person up and sending them on their way. We have got to close the loop on the other side, and this is what these people behind me are so fantastic at," said Milwaukee Fire Department Chief Aaron Lipski.
