"There's No Excuse"; 120 Milwaukee Co. Bars Offering Free Rides Home On NYE
It's no secret, New Year's Eve remains one of the worst nights of the year for drunk driving.
That's why across the region, law enforcement agencies will have extra patrols out Saturday night.
"The main goal is to get everyone home safely," says Greenfield Police Officer Daniel Orlowski.
Last year, nearly 200 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in Wisconsin.
The Tavern League of Wisconsin is hoping people plan ahead before heading out to drink for New Year's Eve.
"We're an industry that welcomes people in our doors, so we have to get them out the door safely as well," says Sharon Ward.
Ward used to own the Last Drop, a bar on Milwaukee's south-side. She's now the administrator for SafeRide, a Tavern League program that offers free rides home for bar customers, no question's asked.
"We get you a $25 cab ride home without any cost to you," she says.
120 bars across Milwaukee County will be participating in the program on New Year's Eve, and every other night of the year. You can find a full list here.
Buses in Milwaukee County will also be free until 4 A.M.
