RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) – A 26-year-old Racine mom is recovering after pieces of drywall fell on her inside her apartment early yesterday evening.
“When the storm hit, we decided to stay in,” said Jacqueline Vana, mom.
Vana was home with her two-month-old son, Travon when she heard “crackling” coming from the ceiling.
“A piece of the ceiling cracked out when I saw that I threw my phone, grabbed my son, went under the table like a tornado duck and cover so I could protect him,” said Vana.
Travon is okay but Vana went to the hospital for back and shoulder injuries.
“I would rather have the damages done to me than him because where he was lying in the bed and I was in the bed. One of the ceiling pieces would have fell straight on top of him,” said Vana.
Officials are still working to determine a cause but Vana believes it was Mother Nature that caused the damage.
“I believe it was caused by the water damage from the rain,” said Vana.
Vana said she is not allowed back into her apartment because of the damage. She is currently staying with a friend until she figures out another place to stay.
