Tenant charged with attempted arson at Ascent Milwaukee apartment building
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 39-year-old man is accused of attempted arson after investigators say while on the 24th floor of an apartment building, he put aerosol cans inside an oven and turned it on.
The incident happened on June 11 at Ascent Milwaukee, located at 700 E. Kilbourn Avenue. The building is known as the tallest timber tower in the world.
Investigators say a man who lives on the 24th floor -- identified as Enrique Torres -- placed three aerosol cans inside a pot and put the pot in an oven and turned it on. Torres then allegedly fled the building.
According to a criminal complaint, smoke filled the apartment and caused approximately $2,000 in damage.
The complaint says, investigators spoke with a person who works for the company that owns the building, who stated Torres was in the lobby area of the building "singing" loudly the words, "burn, burn, burn."
A person who works the security desk at the entrance of the apartment complex told investigators a similar story. The complaint says the worker encountered Torres in the lobby stating, "Get out, get out, get out," along with, "Everything is gonna burn burn burn."
Torres was arrested and charged with one count of attempted arson to a building.
On Thursday, June 15, a court found reason to believe Torres is not competent to proceed and a forensic evaluation was ordered.
The report will be returned to the court on July 7.
