Teen found dead in quarry days after involvement in police pursuit

FRANKLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 17-year-old boy has been found dead in a quarry following a police pursuit that was initiated on Saturday, July 15.

Oak Creek police say they attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding near Pennsylvania Avenue and Drexel Avenue, when one of the passengers of the vehicle got out of the car and fled on foot. Officials say the vehicle then fled westbound on Drexel, reaching speeds of 102 mph before officers lost sight of it. The pursuit was briefly terminated before officers relocated the vehicle and reinitiated a pursuit.

Police say officers pursued the vehicle into the city of Franklin, reaching 93 mph before the suspect vehicle struck a tire deflation device near 51st and Drexel. The pursuit ended near the 7700 block of S. 51st St. when the driver exited the vehicle and ran into a field.

Authorities say the two remaining 18-year-old occupants of the vehicle were arrested and taken to the Milwaukee County Jail facility.

Franklin police briefly pursued the driver on foot after he trespassed onto the property of a quarry in the area but called it off due to dangerous terrain.  Officers deployed a police K-9 and drone but did not locate the driver.

Officials say the boy's family reported him missing with the Milwaukee Police Department after he did not return home Saturday evening.

With the use of a drone, officers located the driver deceased inside the quarry area Wednesday, July 19.

Franklin police are leading the death investigation.

Authorities say at this time, officers have not located the initial passenger that fled on foot.
