Strong Wind Knocks Trees Down on to Homes, Cars, School Bus
More than a dozen kids from Auer Avenue Community School in the Milwaukee Public School District are okay after a tree fell on their school bus. It happened Wednesday afternoon on North 9th and Hadley Streets. Witnesses say the tree fell on top of the bus as it was moving, and the tree was dragged down the road a short distance until the bus came to a stop.
"Boom! It made a big sound on the bus and I could hear the bus driver like what?"
Charles Jefferson remembered sitting in his car talking on the phone at the exact moment the tree fell on the DBI bus. He quickly jumped in to action.
"I'd seen the exit door on the back of the bus and the kids was coming out, so I start grabbing the kids one by one pulling them out the bus," Jefferson said.
That wasn't the only area of Milwaukee that had weather related problems. Anne Strange's home on the southwest side of the city has roof damage because of a tree that blew over.
"I was at work and my neighbor called me to say that my neighbor's tree fell on my house," Strange said.
And near downtown, a woman had a very close call during her lunch break after a tree fell on her car. Luckily, she was safe and sound.
