MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A group working to reduce homelessness in the Milwaukee area is noticing a troubling trend as it observes World Homeless Day.
Street Angels reports a 10% increase in the number of unsheltered people from this year to last.
The organization regularly conducts outreach to connect people with permanent housing, but because of evictions and substance abuse problems, Street Angels leaders are concerned the need for shelter will only grow during the upcoming cold weather months.
"Unfortunately, right now in Milwaukee there are very little-to-no shelter spaces available for anyone, including families with children," said Eva Welch, Street Angels executive co-founder. "And we're here to bring awareness to that and hope that that changes."
Street Angels says with each week, members meet additional families with children who have no permanent shelter.
