KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An hours-long standoff in Kenosha ended with police shooting a domestic violence suspect. It started around 6:15 p.m. on May 4 near the intersection of 50th St. and 14th Ave. when Kenosha police were called for a "child custody issue" between 35-year-old Andres Casas and a woman. Neighbors tell us Casas had two children with the woman who called 911.

Police say when they tried to arrest Casas, he shot at them, later barricading himself inside the home.

"Andres, you are under arrest. This is the Kenosha Police Department. I need you to exit the residence with your hands up," could be heard repeatedly throughout the night on Monday, as the Kenosha Police Department's Hostage Negotiation Team and SWAT team tried to get Casas to surrender.

Tear gas was eventually thrown into the home, and Casas tried jumping out of the window, which is when police shot him. He remains in custody at a hospital; his condition is unknown as of Monday afternoon.

Neighbor Joel Alcantar said he thought the shots fired were fireworks and was asked to stay inside. One neighbor, Cornell Spruill, was recording for much of the night on social media and tells us he was arrested by police because he wouldn't go inside his home.

"Their job is tough, right? They can't just run in there," said Spruill, who says he saw officers shoot Casas, later sending in the K-9 unit. "I know the young man, Andres, any encounter I had with him was pretty decent," he continued, though acknowledging no situation of domestic violence is excusable.

"It was nice before. But now I don’t know what happened," said Alcantar, when asked of the neighborhood. There's a Boys & Girls Club one street down from where the standoff took place.

Casas has a history in Wisconsin courts. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to an attempted armed robbery, first degree recklessly endangering safety with use of a dangerous weapon in a school zone, and substantial battery with use of a dangerous weapon in a school zone.

Then in 2016, he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine on or near a school and possession of a firearm while being convicted of a felony.

No police were injured in the standoff, and an investigation continues, led by the Racine County Sheriff's Office.
