MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Independence Day parades are typically held on the Fourth of July, but there are exceptions.
A festive, colorful Independence Day parade was held not on July 4, but on June 26, and this parade marched through the halls of St. Camillus, a life plan community for seniors.
Starting in the memory care residence, the interactive parade made its way through assisted living and skilled nursing, finishing in St. Camillus' independent living residences.
The parade honored veterans with floats and displays created by staff, residents and volunteers. Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride made a special appearance, along with police officers and firefighters.
"It's also a nice opportunity, where we can engage residents who might not come out of their rooms as often," said Sheila Muencheberg, St. Camillus recreation therapy manager. "We go right by their rooms, and they can engage us and enjoy the parade as well."
Milwaukee's popular Dancing Grannies even made an appearance, spreading smiles as they always do.
