Southwestern Wisconsin Community Rallies Around Transgender Student

A library in Mount Horeb hosted a reading of the book “I am Jazz” after the school district canceled plans for the elementary school students to read the children’s book about a transgender girl, according to WISC.

Parents were told last week that Mount Horeb Primary Center students would read the book because one student identifies as a girl but was born with male anatomy.

The Liberty Counsel, a Florida-based group, threatened to sue over violating parental rights.

The group said the book was not appropriate for children who were five, six or seven years-old.

The book is co-authored by transgender teen Jazz Jennings. Jennings was on the TLC show “I am Jazz.”

Mount Horeb Public Library’s reading on Wednesday was attended by hundreds of community members.

The family with the transgender student did not attend.
