'Shocking': Old World Deli in Greendale to close temporarily after driver hits building

Old World Deli

GREENDALE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Greendale store is being forced to close temporarily after a car drove into the building Monday afternoon.

Alexandra Szeszko said she was at home when she heard a sudden banging noise on her front door.

Standing in front of her was a police officer, alerting her that there was an incident at her family's business.

When they rushed over, they found the front wall of Old World Deli completely smashed in.

"Glass broken, structural damage like crazy," Szeszko said. "Long story short, someone basically ran into the deli with their car."

Thankfully, the store was closed, and no one was hurt. Szesko said officials reported the incident looked to be an accident.

"But now we're pretty much left dealing with the damages and repairing them now," Szesko said. "I broke down, it was very shocking to see and very sad to see. Was not expecting this to happen right after Christmas and right before the new year."

She added that friends and family were up until around midnight, working to board up the broken wall as a brief fix in the meantime.

Now, as the small business faces a big setback, they hope an inspector's report will show they'll be able to reopen sooner rather than later.

"This is definitely the busiest time of the year for us, Christmas and New Year's, so not being able to be open right before New Year's is detrimental to us," Szeszko said. "But we will push through and as soon as we open back again, we're sure we'll have people here supporting us, which we're very thankful for them."

Although it is unclear when that reopening date will be, the owners said the earliest could be Friday.
