MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It was more than two years ago when the BMO Harris Bank branch was destroyed in the Sherman Park unrest following the fatal shooting of Sylville Smith.
Now, a new building is preparing to open in its place.
For many in the Sherman Park neighborhood, the grand opening of a new community center is much more than a simple event. It's the rebirth of a neighborhood.
The Sherman Phoenix building will have its grand opening Friday. It will be used as a community-inspired building where anyone is welcome, housing art exhibits, film showings, and more.
Tonight from 5-8 there will be a grand opening for Sherman Phoenix. The former BMO Harris Bank was renovated into this community center after it was burned during the unrest in Sherman Park in 2016. 28 unique businesses inside @CBS58 pic.twitter.com/kNYCc1xpwS
