SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A police standoff spanning hours Wednesday has ended, leaving a 31-year-old shot and another man dead.

Police say the standoff began around 10 a.m. A little after 4 p.m., we saw police and SWAT enter the home near 9th and Humboldt where they say they've been negotiating with a suspect wanted in a shooting.

When SWAT and police came from inside the home, we did not see a suspect.

Sheboygan police say the standoff started with a call to 911 for someone injured in an explosion, but when first responders arrived on scene, they realized the person wasn't injured from an explosion, but a gunshot wound.

That victim was taken to a nearby hospital where they're currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the person who was shot was a contractor doing work on the home.

People who live near the scene say the standoff is something they've never seen before.

"I thought for sure I wouldn't be dealing with this this morning. You know, it's just a really quiet area. I've never seen anything this serious in Sheboygan before, it's not really a common thing I guess. It's not something was expecting to hear about ever really," said Amy Waters, who lives nearby.

According to police, the individual responsible for the shooting did not vacate the residence. An emergency response team was deployed, negotiations and multiple attempts to get the individual out were unsuccessful.

Police say a search warrant was obtained to arrest the man inside the home, identified as a 52-year-old. When officers attempted to enter the home, officials say the heard a gunshot.

The 52-year-old man was found dead inside the home with a self-inflicted gunshot.

An investigation is ongoing.
