MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It's National Donut Day, and while there's no shortage of sweet donut deals, the Salvation Army of Milwaukee County is going a step further.
Salvation Army volunteers stopped at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center to give away delicious donuts to veterans, staff and visitors.
It's a simple way to say thank you and brighten up the day for people coming and going at the center.
"It's been so nice to see all the veterans coming in. They're coming in for their appointments, so they might not be in the best mood, and then seeing the instant boost in morale -- they're smiling and they're happy to have their donuts. Or on the other side, they're coming out of the hospital and are looking for a sweet treat," said Amy Hand, Salvation Army of Milwaukee County.
Milwaukee police and fire departments also got some free donuts Friday.
