CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Salvation Army visited the Milwaukee Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Friday, June 5 to hand out free donuts to veterans and first responders in observance of National Donut Day.
"Often our people that do our services do it day-in and day-out without recognition and today is just an opportunity to say thank you for their service," said Major Beverly Gates, Milwaukee area commander of the Salvation Army.
National Donut Day was founded in 1938 to honor the "Donut Lassies," women who served donuts to troops during World War I.
