Salvation Army Hands out Doughnuts to Veterans

It's a tradition that dates back 99 years.

Today the local Salvation Army handed out doughnuts to veterans at the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee.

"We know that so many people come out and through this building and we didn't want to run out. We wanted to make sure every soldier got the appreciation that we're trying to give to them."

The tradition started back in 1917 when the Salvation Army originally provided doughnuts to soldiers in World War I. They made it a yearly event the first Friday of June during the great depression to raise money and awareness for social services.
