'Riot grrl' punk pioneers Bikini Kill to perform in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Feminist punk band Bikini Kill is slated to take the stage at Milwaukee's Riverside Theater on Thursday, Aug. 29, as part of their 2024 North American tour. The rock band is known known for its influential role in the "riot grrrl" movement, fueled by political and cultural messages in their music and live performances.

Their reunion, marking the first full shows since 1997, has reignited discussions on the band's significant contributions to the punk genre and its role in shaping feminist discourse.

Originating from Olympia, Wash. in 1990, Bikini Kill became popular within the feminist punk scene, advocating for women's rights and encouraging female participation in music. Milwaukee's concert will feature the band's original lineup, including Kathleen Hanna on vocals, Tobi Vail on drums, Kathi Wilcox on bass and Billy Karren on guitar.

The "riot grrrl" movement is often associated with the band's work, as they actively participated in the movement's underground network of female musicians and activists.

They also found success with albums like "Pussy Whipped" and "Reject All American," which have both been re-issued. Publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork have praised Bikini Kill's legacy and influence on music and culture.
