MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – A dog is safe Wednesday afternoon after it fell into a drainage pipe.

A woman and her dog Sundance were walking through the park Tuesday morning when the dog, who was off leash, went into a drainage pipe about six feet deep.

Milwaukee County, MADACC, and Wauwatosa Fire worked to get the dog out.

The fire department says they brought rope and a ladder but were able to just climb into the drainage pipe and lift Sundance out.

Wauwatosa’s Battalion Chief say they know dogs are like family and will do what they can to help.

“The owner was pretty scared at first. The guys crawled in and pulled the dog out it ran out and she was just ecstatic and they met and hugged and it was cute,” says Stacey Lueptow, Wauwatosa Battalion Chief.

Sundance wasn’t hurt. The Battalion Chief says it’s not a bad idea to keep your dog on leash.
