Report: Badgers running back coach Gary Brown has passed away at age 52

MADISON (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Badgers have reported that running back coach Gary Brown has passed away on Sunday, April 10 at the age of 52.

Brown was the Badgers' running back coach during the 2021 season. He was a highly respected player and coach on all levels of the game.

He joined the Badgers' coaching staff after serving as the running backs coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 2013 to 2019.

During Brown's time in Dallas, he was able to mentor some of the most highly prolific running backs like DeMarco Murray, Darren McFadden and Ezekiel Elliott.

On top of that, Brown also spent four years with the Cleveland Browns, where he mentored Peyton Hillis and Trent Richardson.

Before that, Brown climbed his way up the coaching chain, spending some time at Lycoming College as the running backs coach (2003-05), offensive coordinator at Susquehanna University (2006-07), running backs coach at Rutgers (2008), and spent time in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers and the Green Bay Packers as part of the NFL's Minority Coaching Fellowship Program.

As a player, Brown played four years at Penn State and was their rushing leader as a sophomore.

Brown went on to be selected by the Houston Oilers in the 1991 NFL Draft. During his eight years in the league, Brown had stints with the Oilers, San Diego Chargers and the New York Giants.
