'We're going into Brew-tober!': Brewers close out regular season with historic win; fans pumped for playoffs
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — The regular season ended with fireworks over American Family Field on Sunday, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4.
The Crew wrapped up the season 14 games ahead of the next-best team in the NL Central, heading into the playoffs for the fourth straight year.
Energy was high after Sunday's game in Milwaukee, with fans ready to dive into the highly anticipated postseason.
"We had the most people in the stands still at the end that I've ever seen before," said fan Janine Hake.
Sunday's win was the team's 103rd of the season, continuing to set a franchise record since its 100th win on Thursday.
It was certainly a weekend for the history books. On Saturday, the team named Christian Yelich the franchise's first-ever captain.
“He’s been here for a long time, and he deserves a ring," said fan Greg Brown.
Several ticketholders who talked to CBS 58 on Sunday called this team stronger than ever.
“We've got great openers, great closers, great hitting," Hake said.
“Chourio’s on fire, and Jake Bauers is probably going to get MVP," said 9-year-old Emmett Affolter of Muskego.
Fans hope this is the roster that will go all the way.
"It's our time to shine," said fan Victor Williams. “It’s for our boy Uecker. It’s for you, Bob.”
“This year is our year," said Sandy Wilmot, who watched the team play against the Cardinals in the 1982 World Series, which ended with a Brewers loss in Game 7.
She wore a T-shirt from that series to Sunday's game.
After 44 years, Wilmot is hoping for a new World Series shirt and a better outcome this time.
“We got to get out with the old and get in with the new," she said. "We’re going to win this thing."
"We're going into Brew-tober! Let's go!" cheered fan Nick Olson.
The Brew Crew gets a well-deserved break until Saturday, Oct. 3, when they play the first game of the Division Series at home.
They will face either the Chicago Cubs or San Diego Padres in the NLDS — whoever takes the wild card.
