Racine & Me: Wisconsin Humane Society offers fall, winter youth programs at Racine Campus

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) — Young animal lovers have plenty of opportunities to get involved at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Racine Campus this fall and winter.

From story time with shelter animals to Friday night activities and a one-day winter camp, WHS Youth Programs give children of different ages a chance to learn about animals, meet new friends and become more familiar with the shelter environment.

For some of the youngest animal lovers, Furry Tales Story Time is designed for children ages 2 to 4. The free monthly program includes the reading of an animal-themed book along with a meet-and-greet with an animal at the shelter.

Furry Tales Story Time runs from 10:30 to 11 a.m., with remaining sessions this year scheduled for Nov. 11 and Dec. 9.

The Racine Campus is also welcoming local Girl Scouts from kindergarten through 12th grade for Girl Scout Nights.

The hybrid program includes material for troops to explore ahead of their visit, followed by an interactive evening at the shelter. Girl Scouts will have a chance to meet an animal, create a craft to help animals at WHS and learn more about pets and how to safely interact with them.

The program can also help Girl Scouts make progress toward a badge. Troops receive the badge requirements for their grade level so participants can complete the remaining requirements on their own time. Exclusive Wisconsin Humane Society patches are also available for $2 during registration.

Each Girl Scout Night time slot can accommodate up to 30 participants. Several dates are available through the end of the year, but families and troops are encouraged to register early because programs can fill quickly.

For kids looking for a Friday night out, Kids Night Out gives children in first through sixth grades a chance to spend an evening with fellow animal lovers.

The program runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and includes changing themes, crafts and opportunities to meet animals at the shelter. That means even children who have attended before can find something new during another visit.

Three Kids Night Out events remain this year: Oct. 23, Nov. 20 and Dec. 11. Registration is $30 per child.

And during winter break, kids can spend an entire day learning about animals during Bow Wow Blizzard Camp on Dec. 29.

The one-day camp is open to children in grades 1 through 6 and introduces campers to the work of the Wisconsin Humane Society and the different ways they can help animals of all shapes and sizes. Activities include crafts, games, a tour of Adoption Avenue and opportunities to meet animal guests.

More information about upcoming youth programs, dates and registration is available through the Wisconsin Humane Society’s youth programs calendar.
