RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- After an 18-year-old Kenosha man was shot and killed last Wednesday, community members gathered to pay their respects days later.

A community prayer vigil was hosted by the Racine Interfaith Coalition, who said they come out to support families of victims.

"This is what we do, every time there is a violent death, we come out to pray to resanctify the Earth," said Father Yeprem Kelegian with the Armenian Orthodox Church. "Why are we here? Violence happened and coming together is a healing process."

Family members identified the victim as Geovonnie Amie and described him as a caring man with big dreams.

Mount Pleasant police said Amie was shot on Racine Street just before noon on June 24, where he then drove three blocks north before losing consciousness and hit a parked car.

That prompted Racine police officers to respond to a traffic accident, where they found Amie with a gunshot wound, and despite life-saving measures, he passed away.

"This should not be happening and it's all senseless," Father Kelegian said, adding that gun violence must be stopped. "When we come out here on a sidewalk on a busy street and we see each other, we greet each other, we care for each other, then we really know we're connected, we are not separate."

Mount Pleasant officials said they have known persons of interest, but so far, no arrests have been made.
