RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Racine County sheriff's deputy is facing charges in an accidental shooting that prosecutors say injured two people turkey hunting last April.

James Lehman is charged with second degree reckless injury and injury by negligent use of a weapon.

Court records say Lehman was taking part in a youth turkey hunt with his child on state land in the Village of Rochester back on April 12.

Lehman told a DNR warden he saw what he believed to be a white turkey head and fan just prior to the shooting, according to the criminal complaint. It turned out to be a man and his 7-year-old son.

The complaint says the victim and Lehman knew each other; the victim told investigators he had previously asked Lehman not to hunt at his hunting spots.

Prosecutors say both victims had several wounds, with the child suffering several pellet strikes to the back and head. 

Lehman is due in court next month.

He's been placed on administrative leave.
