Proposed bill cracks down on opioid smuggling through mail

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Senator Tammy Baldwin is part of a bipartisan effort to crack down on foreign mail containing opioids.

Baldwin and Republican Senator Bill Cassidy introduced the Search Now - Inspect for Fentanyl Act.

It allows for specially trained U.S. postal workers at international service centers to inspect mail destined for the U.S. only where there is probable cause.

"We've gotta make sure that our postal service and customs and border patrol agencies have the ability to search and try to protect us in that way," Sen. Baldwin (D)-Wisconsin said.

Wisconsin has seen a spike in fentanyl-related deaths in Milwaukee County alone. The opioid led to 188 overdose deaths in 2018.
