NOW: Promising days ahead for Mitchell Park Domes with potential funding

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted in favor on Thursday, July 25, for $30 million dollars of capital funding to go towards the Milwaukee Mitchell Park Domes.

The $30 million would go towards several projects on the domes, including new glass to keep precipitation out, expansions to the cafe and gift shop, and a new children’s garden.

“This is a project that doesn't just restore or just put the domes back where they were but actually reimagines this new future for them,” Milwaukee Domes Alliance CEO Christa Beall Diefenbach said.

The funds still have to be approved by Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.

“We know that if we address these issues that they’ll continue to be around for another 50 years,” Diefenback said. “We’re talking generations that will be able to benefit from this investment that we’re making today.”

Harry Orlind and his wife live in Florida and decided to stop into the Domes during their vacation to Wisconsin.

“Being surrounded by the serenity of nature just changes a person's attitude,” Orlind said. “It makes the stresses of life seem to disappear at least for a little while.”

The funds and projects are all about keeping the legacy of the domes alive for future tourists and residents.

“For Milwaukee they’re part of our heart, so many people when they think about Milwaukee or what makes Milwaukee, Milwaukee, the Mitchell Park Domes are certainly high up on that list,” Diefenback said.
