MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- An investigation is underway after an officer-involved shooting on UWM's campus.

According to UW-Milwaukee Police, two officers responded to the Fine Arts Complex for a report of a man sleeping in the building around 6:48 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said the officers made contact with the man and an altercation took place. During the altercation, officers discovered the man had a weapon and he was shot by police. The man was later taken to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Both of the officers involved in the altercation were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

UW-Milwaukee Police say the incident involved only one suspect and a campus safety alert about the shooting was sent to all employees and students at 7:09 a.m. Tuesday morning with an all-clear message being sent out at 7:22 a.m.

Investigators said other than the two UWM police officers, no faculty, staff, or students were hurt in the incident. Police said because UWM is currently on spring break, there are relatively few people on campus.

UWM Police say the investigation is ongoing and is being turned over to the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team. The Oak Creek Police Department will be the lead agency on the investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward and call the Oak Creek Police Department at 414-766-7631.
