MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- "To see the lack of aftercare, lack of compassion and humanity, is actually unacceptable."

As the nation reflects on the death of Tyre Nichols, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman says moments like that have no place in Milwaukee.

"I have no tolerance at all for unprofessional, inhumane behavior, and I mean it. You can check the record, I have no tolerance for that type of behavior on the Milwaukee Police Department," Chief Norman said.

Norman says community and police relations continue to be a work in progress.

"So it’s a balancing act, understanding from a historical perspective, things that we as a department, we, as part of an organization, should own, but also being a part of the community, from the community, understanding that history, that legacy."

Norman says Nichols' death serves as a reminder of the internal work that must continue to be done to fix law enforcement shortcomings.

"Are there any takeaways, are we being as responsible, understanding the lift, the need, in regards to being insightful about what's going on in your own four corner of your walls? We don’t take this lightly; we are aware and that we are taking great pains to ensure accountability within our organization, within our city," Chief Norman said.

CBS 58's Bryant McCray asked Chief Norman what his hopes are for 2023, for his officers and the community of Milwaukee.

Chief Norman said, "That we continue to engage, that we continue to communicate, that we continue to make sure that we are being as open to opportunities to work together in this thing called public safety."
