‘People went crazy’: Milwaukee seniors relive Braves’ 1957 World Series win as Brewers chase first title

HALES CORNERS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- As the Milwaukee Brewers move one win away from their first World Series title, fans at Forest Ridge Senior Community are looking back at the city's baseball history and hoping to witness another championship.

For some residents, the memories go back nearly 70 years, to when the Milwaukee Braves defeated the New York Yankees in the 1957 World Series.

Eileen Roth remembers watching the historic victory on her family's first television set.

“That was our first TV set and it was black and white, one of those big clunkers,” Roth said. “We didn't get a TV before then because there was no television station in central Wisconsin.”

Louis Smith remembers the excitement surrounding the Braves, especially when Hank Aaron hit a home run.

“Everytime Hank Aaron hit a home run ‘hammering Hank’ I remember people went crazy every time the Braves hit a home run,” Smith said. “People were so electrifying.”

The celebration extended beyond the ballpark and into Milwaukee's streets.

“People running up and down national avenue screaming and hollering,” Smith said.

The memories aren't limited to the Braves. Mary Snyder remembers the Brewers' 1982 World Series run and how different the experience of attending a game was before smartphones and social media.

“There was no texting, no social media just a cardboard sign saying ‘standing room only tickets $30.’ $30 back then,” Snyder said.

Snyder still rarely misses a game, and her love for the Brewers even inspired her dog's name. The 3-year-old Maltipoo recently became Windsor Chourio, a nod to Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio.

Now, as the Brewers chase the first World Series championship in franchise history, residents at Forest Ridge are hoping Milwaukee's next baseball celebration is just around the corner.

And for these longtime fans, no baseball gathering would be complete without a familiar song and a Cracker Jacks.

“It's 1, 2, 3 strikes you're out in the old ball game!”
