People fed up with neighborhood violence, MPD fighting uphill battle

MILWAUKEE -- Two people shot, one killed - within 15 minutes.  That's what happened around lunch time Monday afternoon near 49th and Center on Milwaukee's North Side.

One of the people killed was a known drug dealer.  He was shot while in his car.  As the Milwaukee Police Department investigated that crime, another person was shot literally blocks away.  Officiers headed in that direction.  The victim didn't want to cooperate with police when they arrived.   People living in the area spilled into the streets.  Police had to contain that too.   This isn't new to the neighborhood.   The police department knows that....the people living there know that too.  However they want something to be done.

\"The police here in the seventh district are working very closely with this neighborhood to deal with systemic crime problems,\" Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said.

\"Lip service.  That's the way we look at it,\" Thomas Reed, who lives near the area, said.  \"I would just like to see something done because this house here is full of kids. I worry about their safety. Every single night it's gunshots. It's scary\"

\"We've been watching this crime escalate here over the years,\" Reed added.  \"Calling the police, what we get back when we call the police...move, get out of there, it's going to get worse.  We've had this numerous times over and over and over.\"

Investigators made an arrest at a home near 47th and Center for felony gun possession. At this time, police have not said if that arrest is connected to the homicide.
