MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For more than half a century, Milwaukee's Penfield Children's Center has been serving the needs of kids for the first five years of their lives.
They help kids with and without developmental issues and on Monday, Dec. 9, they started work on a cool new playground.
They're converting Penfield's existing indoor play area to what they're calling "Camp Wilder." It's a space that's crucial to the center's mission of helping kids develop their motor skills by playing.
CBS 58 talked to the president and CEO of Penfield, Polina Makievsky, who describes the current playground as "well loved."
Camp Wilder will be much different.
"We're going to have a camper, a waterfall, a ship, a lot of wonderful exhibits," said Makievsky. "The space is designed to promote learning, the development of gross motor skills, the development of relationships and play between children. So, it's going to be custom developed and designed for children ages 5 and under."
The Penfield Children's Center is located near 26th and Wells.
The new playground is the result of a $480,000 fundraising campaign.
