MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Department of Justice has released an update following the officer-involved shooting in Mount Pleasant.

This incident involved Sergeant Eric Giese, a 12-year veteran of the Village of Mount Pleasant Police Department, The DOJ confirms.

Sergeant Giese has been a sergeant for a year and a half.

Immediately following the incident, Sergeant Giese was placed on administrative leave, per department policy following an officer involved critical incident.

According to the Department of Justice, Sergeant Giese was attempting to stop a fleeing subject on a bicycle. According to The DOJ, the officer pursued on foot and saw that the individual was armed with a gun.

According to the DOJ, various non-lethal methods were unsuccessfully used by Sgt. Giese including verbal commands and electronic control devices.

Lethal force was subsequently used, the DOJ says. 

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing at this time.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis (CBS 58) -- The Racine Police Department has identified the deceased individual in Saturday's officer-involved shooting in Mount Pleasant.   The individual has been identified as 18-year-old Tyrese West of Racine.

In a news release, the Racine Police, the investigating agency, said that around 1:35 AM Saturday, a  Mount Pleasant Police officer attempted to make contact with an individual on a bicycle.   The individual fled and during a short foot pursuit, the officer saw that the individual was armed.  

According to the preliminary investigation, less-lethal efforts to stop the threat were not successful and West continued to ignore police commands.  Lethal force was then used to stop the threat.   Life saving measures were taken but West died at the scene.

The Racine Police Department and State Division of Criminal Investigation are continuing to investigate the shooting.   The Racine Police area asking that any witnesses or citizens with information about the incident to contact the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at 262-635-7756.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. (CBS 58) -- One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Mount Pleasant early Saturday morning.

The incident happened around 1:35 AM in the area of 25th and Racine Streets.   According to a news release from the Mount Pleasant Police Department, an officer was forced to use deadly force when confronting an uncooperative male suspect.   After the shooting, live saving efforts were made, but the suspect died at the scene.

The Mount Pleasant Police Officer was not injured in the incident.

The identification of the victim will not be released pending an autopsy and the notification of family.

The Racine Police Department is the primary agency handling the investigation with assistance from the WI Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation and the WI State Patrol.
