Officials: Wisconsin farmers being targeted in suspected grant scam

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection is warning a phone scam targeting farmers.

The DATCP says some farmers are being called about supposed grants from the “Federal Crop Registry,” being left messages with a number to call and told they have three days to respond to the offer.

Officials with the DATCP says there is no “Federal Crop Registry” program, the number given in the message is no longer in service and the USDA will not call you and offer you grant money.

The DATCP says while the USDA does give grants, you must apply for them in writing (typically online).

For more information on grant scams, review DATCP’s Government Grant Scams fact sheet. For additional information, visit the Consumer Protection Bureau at http://datcp.wisconsin.gov, send an e-mail to [email protected] or call the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-422-7128.
