Officials: Racine woman charged in fatal stabbing wanted victim 'to get scared'

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 27-year-old Racine woman has been charged with first degree intentional homicide, in connection with a stabbing that left her 27-year-old boyfriend dead.

The stabbing happened on Saturday, June 10 near 9th and Walnut.

According to a criminal complaint, when police arrived to the scene, 27-year-old Adela Gomez-Zuniga was laying next to the victim, crying with blood on her shirt and stated immediately upon approaching her, "I stabbed him."

Neighbors said the 27-year-old victim died on the sidewalk. The complaint says he died from a stab wound to the chest.

Gomez-Zuniga was taken into custody.

The criminal complaint says officials allowed Gomez-Zuniga to change out of the clothes she was wearing. While changing in a bathroom, officials noted they heard Gomez-Zuniga state without provocation or questioning, "that [expletive], I hope he dies."

Officials say Gomez-Zuniga initially invoked her rights and did not wish to speak with investigators without an attorney present. However, when the investigators left the interview room, the complaint says Gomez-Zuniga "screamed" for them to come back inside. Gomez-Zuniga then agreed to speak with investigators without an attorney present.

During the interview, the criminal complaint says Gomez-Zuniga admitted to stabbing the victim while having an argument. Gomez-Zuniga told investigators the argument started because the victim accused her of cheating on him. The knife Gomez-Zuniga used, according to the complaint, was used to cut up strawberries earlier in the day for a picnic.

Gomez-Zuniga stated, according to the criminal complaint, during the argument they were pushing and punching each other. At one point, the criminal complaint says the victim went downstairs to retrieve $400 they had put away to save. After returning upstairs, Gomez-Zuniga stated, "I grabbed the knife." The victim allegedly stated, "you're not going to do [expletive]," and that's when Gomez-Zuniga reportedly stabbed the victim in the chest.

After the stabbing, Gomez-Zuniga told investigators the victim started running out the back door and she followed to get her money back. While running away, the victim reportedly stopped running and was "trying to take breathes."

At one point, the complaint says, while Gomez-Zuniga was explaining the incident she reportedly said, "I can't believe [the victim] is dead, that was never my intention." When asked what her intent was, Gomez-Zuniga reportedly replied, "I wanted him to get scared."

According to the criminal complaint, Gomez-Zuniga stated both her and the victim had been drinking the day of the incident.

In court on Monday, June 12, a judge set Gomez-Zuniga's bond at $500,000. She's due in court for a preliminary hearing on June 21.
