Officials Identify Wrong-way Driver in Fatal Iowa Crash

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officials have identified the man who crashed his car into a police vehicle, killing two Des Moines police officers and a prisoner.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Safety say 25-year-old Benjamin Beary, of Knoxville, died at site of the fiery crash early Saturday. Police say Beary's vehicle was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 80 when the crash occurred west of Des Moines.

The Des Moines Register (http://dmreg.co/1MwQNe2 ) reports the State Medical Examiner used dental records to confirm his identity.

Beary's family released a statement Monday saying Beary was spending time with friends before the crash.

Officers Susan Farrell and Carlos Puente-Morales were killed in the crash. The officers were returning a prisoner, Tosha Hyatt, from Council Bluffs to Des Moines when their car was struck.
