New Parking Scanning System Implemented

Hussein Ali has been driving taxis for 15 years. He's been all over the city of Milwaukee, but lately, many of his stops are at the city tow lot.

\"the snow makes it hard for people to find a place to park. People go downtown or to the east side on Friday and Saturday night to drink and have fun and don't want to drive. They leave their cars there and they get towed,\" Ali.

Willie Holmes is just one of many who woke up to an unpleasant surprise.

\"I got a call from my brother that I got towed.\"

The Department of Public Works told us, there is a new system called LPR which stands for License Plate Recognition. The system was implemented on January 1st.

We're told it's a camera on the parking enforcement officers jeeps.

It takes a picture of the drivers plates, lets the enforcement officer check the status of a vehicle and informs the officer whether or not the car has an overnight parking pass.

DPW  couldn't say if the new system has led to more cars being towed or ticketed.

CBS  58's Lila Carrera reports.
