NEW BERLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- This week is National Fall Prevention Week - a time to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries and deaths among older adults.
The New Berlin YMCA Wellness Center is offering free balance screenings Sept. 23 - 27.
Experts say among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths, unintentional injuries, and hospital admissions for trauma. Even falls without injury can cause fear of falling, leading to physical decline, depression, social isolation and take a serious toll on older adults' quality of life and independence.
Balance screenings are available between 8-9 AM, 12-1 PM, and 5-6 PM. The screenings take five to ten minutes and include a written risk quiz, timed up and go test, and a balance test.
