New arrest warrant issued for man who broke into off-campus apartment near MU, officials say
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As Marquette's new school year is set to begin next week, police are searching for a Milwaukee man who they say broke into an off-campus apartment near the university.
Police said 30-year-old DeAndre Morgan broke through a first-floor window at an apartment building on Kilbourn Ave. early in the morning on Sunday, Aug. 2.
A Marquette student and her roommate were inside sleeping, and according to court documents, called 911 and jumped out of their window while Morgan was still inside.
Officers later found Morgan himself sitting on a couch on the second floor with a bag full of their things, including alcohol and electronics.
He was originally charged with misdemeanors and released on bond, but later prosecutors upgraded his charges to felonies, prompting a new arrest warrant to be issued.
"I do remember being warned about just safety in general just with being in the city, especially car break-ins," said Emily Ramirez, a rising senior at the college. "A little nerve-wracking but I also trust our MUPD here and I do believe they're working really hard to get them caught, but not necessarily the greatest feeling to know he's still out there."
Others agreed, adding that with the campus so close to downtown, it's important to keep an eye out.
"This is Milwaukee, this is a city, so just to encourage students to use resources we offer to ensure protection," said rising senior Grace Sviland. "We've just been through a bunch of training that has taught us all about safety procedures."
According to online records, Morgan has a criminal history and last served time for armed robbery in 2023.
