MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Police Department District 6 headquarters took part in a new effort to honor one of their own Thursday, March 5.
City leaders, officers, and neighbors got together for a chili cookoff. At the center of it all, was Officer Kendall Corder, who died after being shot in the line of duty last summer.
The goal was to raise money to send a handful of officers to Washington DC when Corder's name is added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial. But it's also a chance for officers to connect with the community.
"It's always great to have the community come break bread with us. We can give back and show our appreciation for the community members that show up. Days like this are very important and a lot of fun for us," MPD Capt. Timothy Leitzke said.
Corder's name will be added to the memorial during National Police Week, which runs from May 10-16.
